Evans 1 and Dr Joke Spikman 2 1 Academic Unit of Mental Health & Wellbeing, Institute of Health & Wellbeing, University of Glasgow 2 Dept. of Clinical and Developmental Neuropsychology, Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences University of Groningen 2. Assessment of executive functioning in virtual reality Noomi Katz, Research Institute for the Health & Medical Professions, Ono Academic College, Israel Virtual reality (VR) was used to develop a virtual mall (VMall) which is a two dimensional virtual supermarket that runs on a video-capture VR system and was further developed on a high-end CAREN system that enables the synchronization between the movements of the user and the virtual scene progression as well as registration of all aspects of performance. We assess and treat executive functions, dual tasking and multitasking in the context of an everyday task of shopping. Within the VMall, an adapted version of the Multiple Errands Test (MET)- Hospital Version the Virtual MET (VMET) was developed and tested for its validity among healthy and post stroke participants groups and significant correlations with the MET were established. The use of VMall was further studied for its treatment effectiveness on measures of executive functions and everyday performance in studies with people following TBI and stroke and was found to be effective and enjoyable. The functional environment (VE) within the CAREN system was studied for the dual task effect of motor and executive function performance and initial findings will be reported. Additionally, at the other end of the VR complexity spectrum, a supermarket environment was constructed on a desktop computer and used to compare groups of people with Traumatic Brain Injury, Mild Cognitive Impairment and Schizophrenia: MCI participants were found to use less efficient strategies and needed more time to complete the task.
